Help me decide... [Aug. 9th, 2010|01:54 pm]
Firefly / Serenity Cosplay
I recently bought this amazing steampunk bellydancing bodice from Pendragon:

Several of my friends, upon seeing me wearing it all chimed in "Browncoat!!"

Thus was born the idea of putting together a femme version of Mal's costume for Dragon*Con. I have a button-down shirt and I even have the QMX prop gun, so all I really need to finish this is the skirt.

Herein lies my dilemma.

The dancer in me wants full, twirly and swirly (because I WILL be dancing there), like this beige number:

But I'm also pondering a more tailored twill skirt like this because I can easily add the brown stripe down each side:

So, help me decide. I know I will get more use from the full skirt, but it would be a bitch and a half to add the striping (and it likely won't really be seen with all the foofiness). Or go with the more tailored skirt, even though I can't really find much else to use it for and it is really not suited for dancing?

ConJour 2010: Something for everybody! [Sep. 3rd, 2009|12:54 pm]
Firefly / Serenity Cosplay

I thought this would interest the community as it relates to numerous elements of the community's subject and purpose.

ConJour 2010 Flier

The University of Houston-Clear Lake Gamers' Guild is proud to announce the second annual ConJour, a Fantasy, Horror and Sci-Fi convention. For 2010, we return to the Greater Houston area, southeast technically, within spitting distance of NASA to host a cultural exchange of grand proportions on the campus of the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

We need volunteers and game masters, both of whom get in free! We have an art show, an artist alley, and a dealer's room, all with plenty of tables left to be filled. We're presently the least expensive table space you'll find in the state of Texas!

Full costumes are welcome and encouraged. Realistic looking weaponry may need to be inspected by the campus police and possibly peace-bound, but will not be outright rejected. At worst, you may be asked to lock something in your vehicle by the campus police.

Pre-registration is open to the public and will not be closing for several months more. Get in on the fun! Plan your trip now.

We also have 2010 Tee Shirts for sale in advance.

Con-Jour: Houston Fantasy, Horror, and Sci-fi Convention [Jan. 21st, 2009|07:28 am]
Firefly / Serenity Cosplay

January 30-February 1, 2009 is the inauguration of a new convention to the Houston area. The Houston Browncoats were contacted in August, I recieved no word from the con-staff in charge of contactng them if they ever responded. We need help. We know you can help! Cosplay turnout, volunteers, speakers on open panels, LARPers, and attendees are needed to make this thing work. That's where you come in.  Our website has been resurrected from Hurricane Ike's muck and mire, and we have been moving full steam ahead. Short staffed due to the same, it has taken us a long time to get around to everybody we need. We apologize for the short notice. We have links to sign-up for all these things on the convention website, Con-Jour 2009, and where there isn't a link you can find contact information. You can always find news and more at conjour_news  on LiveJournal. We would love to have a strong Firefly turnout. Many of our staff and guests also frequent ApolloCon in June. Please, get in touch.

More From Terra Orleans Pt. 1 [Jan. 30th, 2007|04:22 pm]
Firefly / Serenity Cosplay

Yes, I know it's been awhile but between school papers and holidays, I have had very little time.  So, on the news:

The sheriff and one of the Alliance officers left town for one of the outer, smaller settlements.  It seems that Sheriff Brody will be out of communication for a while so that he can keep a small feud from brewing in these settlements.  Dogwood immediately to charge to the chagrin of the other Alliance officer.

T. J., the saloon's bartender, unfortunately, got stuck with a very unhappy Adelaide.  Cecelia discovered the family mansion was full of the spiders mentioned in my last report.  Cecelia sent Adelaide to the saloon, to be out of her way while Cecelia and the indentured staff of the plantation cleared out the infestation.  So TJ heard just about every complaint about the saloon, and everyone else in the town from Adelaide.

The small settlement of Terra Orleans had a very interesting visitor.  Deputy Feng Dogwood's cousin, Nam, came into town to visit.  Considering the deputy's questionable state of mind, of course he did not remember her.  Nam visited the mechanic shop, while there and an unfortunate accident happened.  One of the cables to a crane that was holding up an engine broke, and the engine landed within inches of Nam.  Nam, herself, made a very positive impression on the town.   She talked about Dogwood before the Unification War.  The players learned that Dogwood was both an accomplished mathematician, and tactician.  Dogwood decided one day to go down into the trenches and see for himself how well his strategies were working.  Nam couldn't explain what happened to him there.  It is well known, as the sheriff tells it, that Dogwood and the sheriff were in the war together, and each has saved the other's lives countless of times.  The sheriff has even quoted a famous Chinese proverb concerning that, "When you save a man's life, you become responsible for him."  In an odd moment of lucidity, Dogwood, finally recognized Nam.  Remembering what happened to him the last time they met, Dogwood became quite upset and angry with her.  He ran off, and Nam ran off after him.  The next thing the players heard was an "Oh my God!"  Coming from Dogwood in the sheriff's office and jail.  They all ran to see what happened; there lay Nam, with a mortal wound in the heart and Dogwood holding a knife.

That is all for now.  I will write more later, when I have more time.

Update on Terra Orleans LARP [Nov. 11th, 2006|10:06 pm]
Firefly / Serenity Cosplay

Best place I can think to put this.  I had a new player come in as a Companion.  She had never LARP'ed before and wants to dress up next time.  I am looking forward to next time, I may dress up myself.

News From Terra Orleans:

Two weeks after Adelaide's Birthday, the bartender, T.J. , and the gambler, Troy, fumigated the saloon getting rid of the pests of the insect kingdom.  Troy worked out a deal with T.J. for his own table and a few other things. Cecilia Thibadoux came in started playing darts with Troy and accidently left her own personal darts on the table when she left.

Sheriff Ellijah Brody  interviewed and briefed the new Companion, Lisa, on some of the ins and outs of Terra Orleans society, then took her to introduce her to Cecilia Thibadoux. Well Cecilia was pleased to find out a new Companion had arrived, and then was a bit surprised and somewhat disappointed to find out the new Companion was female instead of male as Selene had promised her. Cecilia went ahead and set her up in her old companion's apartment until arrangements could be made for Lisa.

After cleaning the place up a bit, Lisa lies down and a spider drops on her from no where. She screams in surprise and rolls off the couch she was laying on. She gets up composes herself and finds another spider staring at her and chittering at her. The Companion screams again and runs out of the apartment and towards the saloon. At the same time this is happening, Kiora is doing some research on the local herbs in her apothecary shop when she is confronted by a chittering spider. Kiora goes to attack it and misses. In the mean time, 2 others have shown up. She goes to attack again and is bitten by one of the spiders. Dizzy from the spider venom, Kiora escapes to the saloon.

While Kiora screams and cries for help in the street, Troy, T.J., and Lisa are playing poker for high stakes. Troy has decided he wants a lovely barmaid at his side while he plays poker. and is looking at the Companion to fill this position.  While the GM's still need to find out what the outcomes of those games were, (we were setting stuff up for other scenes) we finally made the gambling group hear Kiora as she stumbled into the bar. Fortunately Lisa knows enough first aid to patch her up a bit.

T.J. hears his guard cat mewing oddly and goes off to find that one of the spiders has wrapped the cat in silk and is about to eat the cat. T.J. starts fighting with it, finally fires his gun at it, which alerts Troy. Troy goes and finds T.J. battling another spider and the two of them manage to kill the thing.

Kiora decides it's time to figure out what they know about these things. They have figured out they are somewhat intelligent as they seem to be able to dodge and move quickly, and they seem to be communicating with each other (chittering). The venom they have is weak, but could probably kill a small animal. Also they have a somewhat tough exoskeleton. Lastly, these things are not in their mature state.

Kiora decided to try to talk to these things. With the rest of the group looking on from the saloon, Kiora finds one in the street and starts talking to it, nicely. She gets surrounded by them while talking to them. She finally asks them to take her to their leader, so they lead her off to an abandoned warehouse in town. The rest of the group arm themselves with a broom, knives, and a scatter gun, and the Sheriff is called in to help.

Kiora is allowed to go into the warehouse, while the rest of the party is blocked off from entering by a nice mass of spiders. T.J. decides to try to shoot them and misses. Lisa in one fell swoop, bats all of them aside in a writhing mass, and T.J. stomps on them all before they get to attack.

In the meantime, Kiora is attempting to talk down a huge mature spider. The rest of the party bursts in, the Sheriff draws his gun and "MOMMA" spider jumps on him and proceeds to attack him. With much hitting and missing, the party manages to get the spider off the Sheriff, capture it, and bottle it, but not before it called another larval spider. The second spider was killed immediately.

Now for the Conclusion to the adventure. To the chagrin of the GM's, "MOMMA" spider is currently sitting in a soundproof bottle on the apothecary's back counter. The Sheriff, T.J., and Troy gone from building to building all over town and wiped out the entire spider population. Lisa has a spider free apartment, even if the aprtment is temporary. All is well with the world, until the next adventure...
